“Results! Why, man, I have gotten a lot of results. I know several thousand things that won’t work!”, Thomas Edison quipped about experimenting with the light bulb.

He had no road map, no steps to follow, only his intellect and resilience to keep trying. We, however, in planning for our financial results, are in a much different situation.

For centuries, people like you and I have been experimenting with our finances – trial and error – sometimes it’s worked, other times it has not. Why do we experiment for results? If we think about it, there really is no need.

The issues and opportunities we face have been around for ages. The real problem is that what we want as financial results have only a little to do with money and a lot to do with what you want from money. It can get confusing! There is hope, an answer and a path to follow.

We can all tend to jump into our money moments of spending, saving, giving, taxes and investing with less than clear results in mind. But when you start with the right end in mind, the steps become clearer, and the results are more certain. The secret of the right results, though, is that they naturally require the right steps to get us there. However, we still might entertain an experiment, or, try to take some not-so-shortcuts.  Let’s take a look at three common “results” that likely have crossed our paths.

  1. Do you want THEIR results? Sometimes you may not know what you want, and worse, not even try to figure it out. Maybe you see someone else’s results and you jump in, getting caught up in the crowd. The chances that these results match what is best for you and what God wants for you, is very unlikely. Usually, it’s not until later that you realize this is not where you want to go with your money.
  2. Do you want YOUR results? This is where I find many families. They are thinking through their money moments and setting their goals, their results. Which we all need to do, but here is the question – based upon what? Is it your own experiment? The driving factor here can be our own desires but God’s results that He asks of us become more of an afterthought. Self-focused financial goals may result in more money, but they always result in less God. Click To Tweet
  3. Do you want GOD’S results? Of course God wants us to achieve good results. He wants us to use our resources for our needs, and we know He also wants us to use them for the needs of others. As you spend time in God’s word, He will reveal His desired results for you and your money. The same results He asks of you are the same results He asks of the use of your finances. Once His true results are clear, and your prayerful obedience has begun, you will find that your needs are satisfied, His results are solidified, and He is glorifiied.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Corinthians 10:31 ESV

Like Edison, there are a thousand results with your money that just don’t work. There is only one result that puts your desires in perspective and stands up to the test of time. When you begin with God’s results in mind, His wisdom and truth will guide your steps. Following Him faithfully leads to His results, His glory and always your ultimate financial wellbeing.
